Evaluating a Menstrual Hygiene Management Intervention for Youth on the Autism Spectrum
Menstrual hygiene management (MHM) remains an uninvestigated topic of research for menstruators on the autism spectrum. Keely Lundy and colleagues from the University of Utah’s School Psychology Program developed an exploratory study on increasing independence and accuracy of changing a sanitary napkin by youth on the autism spectrum. Specifically, the researchers trained caregivers via telehealth to implement the intervention with their child in the home setting. The intervention incorporated personalized animated video technology to model the appropriate steps of changing a sanitary napkin along with additional support (i.e., verbal and physical prompting). Initial results have shown growth in the youths’ independence and accuracy with the MHM task after application of the intervention by caregivers. Finally, participants have reported high levels of acceptability to both the consultation and training via telehealth and the animated video technology.
